transmitter

A chemical which a neuron uses to influence the activity of an anatomically adjacent cell body, such as a hair cell. A neurotransmitter is any one of numerous chemicals that modify or result in the transmission of nerve impulses between synapses. A transmitter can also refer to electronic equipment that generates and amplifies a carrier wave, modulates it with a meaningful signal, as derived from speech or other sources, and radiates the resulting signal from an antenna.
