in a mammalian blastocyst, the outer superficial layer of epithelial cells surrounding the inner cell mass. This specialized tissue forms a trophic interface between the Embryo and mother during cleavage, and subsequently forms the Embryonic portion of the placenta upon implantation into the endometrial epithelium of the uterine wall. A portion of cytotrophoblast cells (near the inner cell mass) form the highly invasive extravillous trophoblasts which invades the endometrial stroma.
