innate immunity

A system of blood factors, especially the complement system, and cells, especially macrophages, which affords protection against invading micro-organisms. Unlike acquired or adaptive immunity, which is based upon recognition by antibodies, innate immunity is independent of prior exposure and depends upon pattern-recognition receptors of relatively broad specificity, particularly those on the surface of macrophages, which allow recognition of micro-organisms and opsonized particles.Bendelac, A. and Fearon, D.T.
